Lessons from the Garden

Psalms 46:10 

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. ”

I enjoy vegetable gardening on a level that is slightly more than a hobby, but not quite to full off the grid living...(Yet) 😉

June is always a funny month for gardening in our area. I call it the weeding and waiting month. Irrigation has been on long enough and the weather is warm enough that weeds can take over a carefully prepared bed in the blink of an eye. Nearly all of the seedlings I started or bought were planted back in May. It will be at least another month before we really start to see a dent in our grocery bill from our harvest. 

It is a month in which a gardener has to be still and know the process of growth is happening. Yet we cannot be idle in our stillness, unless we wish the weeds to take over. 

Do you see the spiritual correlation? There has been A LOT of mind boggling things going on in our world over the last few months. There has been a flooding of informational water coming at us from all directions. The weeds of fear and anxiety are quick to seed, take root and grow in our hearts and minds. It is exhausting trying to live in and out maneuver it all, and we are NOT called to live like that.

Today in the quietness of my garden God reminded me that this is a season in which I need to practice being still so I can listen for His voice which whispers OVER and DROWNS out the noise coming from all directions. 

He reminded me that I need to keep pulling out the weeds of fear and anxiety and to know that he is God. 

I do these by getting into the Bible and making sure I am having intentional times of prayer. Digging into and reading the word daily helps me to filter out the noise. My time of prayer allows me to cast my fear and anxiety onto the Lord.
